Cables.

Plenum / PVC

  1. plenum is cable that is laid in the air spaces of a building
  2. plenum cable is covered with a fire-retardant plastic jacket of either a low-smoke polyvinyl chloride
  3. plenum cables were patented in 1987
  4. a plenum might be created by a false ceiling , false floor, metal duct work, or a variety of other construction methods.
  5. the main purpose is to move air that's environmentally controlled in some manner

UTP (e.g. CAT3, CAT5 / 5e, CAT6)

  1. UTP are unshielded twisted pairs
  2. They are twisted to keep away from electromagnetic interference
    1. CAT3 - for networking, CAT3 cable used to be acceptable. However, Cat3 operates at up to 10mbps with about two or three twists per foot
    2. Cat5/5e - most networks now use at least Cat5 cable, which operates at up to 100mbps, or Cat5e, which operates at up to 1gbps. Cat5 and Cat5e cables have 20 twists per foot
    3. Cat6 - Cat6 cables use higher-quality materials and can operate at up to 2.5Gbps

STP

  1. STP stands for shielded twisted pair cables
  2. these cables are composed of four pairs of wires
  3. the shielding for STP can be either foil or braided wire
  4. the wires are twisted together to cancel out electromagnetic inference

Fiber Optic

  3. The wire is made up of glass strands
  4. fiber optics are thinner and lightweight
    1. single mode optic fibers support only a single transmission path. they are used for most communication links longer than 300 meters
    2. multi-mode optic fibers support many transmission paths . multi-mode optic fibers generally have a large-diameter core and are used for short- distances , typically less than 300 meters

Coaxial cable

  3. RG-8 or RG-11 are examples of thick-net cables

    2. Also for telephone use
    3. RJ-45 connector attaches to eight wires, as opposed to the for or six in RJ-11
    4. An RJ-45 connector won't fit into an RJ- 11
    5. it has 8 pins

    1. Are found commonly in big business and homes and organizations
    2. RJ11 connector has a total of 6 connectors pins
    3. RJ-11 connector is also referred to as a 6P2C
    4. Only two wires in the twisted paired cable is used
    5. they are connected to pins 3 and 4
    6. the twisted wires are wrapped in colored plastic insulation were used
    7. the configuration of wireds -green-red and black - yellow pairs
    8. it provides the options for two lines or one line plus intercom
